Phil Irons

All day demonstration - 11 March 2018

Phil gave us a fascinating insight into the life of a professional turner (he currently has a shed full of about 400 urns {yes that sort of urn} rough cut and drying) as well as demonstrating some of his remarkable skills.  He began with a warm up producing a foot massager in London plane before going on to showing how he finish turns a piece which he has rough cut in burr Elm.  Click here for pictures of thes two projects He then took a lump of very rough Horse Chestnut burr (top right) and (after some discussion with Martin Dickinson about the shape of onions) produced a beatifully shaped piece (middle right).  This he then proceded to colour with three coats of black and then red and finally azurre blue to produce a rather stunning piece of artwork.  To see more pictures of this process click here.  He finished by colouring a pre-turned pot (bottom right).  More of Phil’s work can be seen on his own website
Thanks to Peter Jackson for the two pictures of finsihed pieces.
