Duck decorated box
The next item to be made was a box.
This was made from a piece of Sycamore 4” square
by 6” in length which was mounted on the lathe
between a Steb centre and a revolving tail stock.
The piece was then rounded off and chucking points
made at both ends. Once round it was parted in the
centre with the final cut being made with a fine saw.
The base was then hollowed, as boxes tend to be and
the two parts added back together (join reinforced
with tape) while the lid was turned off-centre and a
decorative figure made on the lid (Gary’s definition of
a Scottish Duck with a thistle heed).
Finally Gary made a textured ring around the base
which he then coloured to bring it out as a highlight
on the finished piece.
